FOUNDING DESKS — EST. 2021
Gawlo was founded in 2021 in Lisbon by Marta Quintas, formerly a senior editor at Wired, and Daniel Hofstetter, a thirteen-year Reuters investigative reporter. Both had watched the same press release travel, untouched, through a dozen mainstream inboxes; both had grown tired of writing the morning brief from a wire feed.
The first issue shipped from a converted print shop on Rua da Boavista with seven contributing analysts and a 612-subscriber launch list. By the end of 2022 the team had grown to nineteen full-time staff. By the close of 2024 the newsroom coordinated a network of 140 contributing analysts reporting from 31 countries — with satellite desks in Berlin (opened 2022, covering Central Europe and the Baltic) and Mexico City (opened 2023, covering LATAM field reports).

The headquarters remains at Rua da Boavista 47, 1200-066 Lisboa, Portugal. The doors are open to readers on Tuesdays.

THE CONTRIBUTOR NETWORK
Beyond the 38 full-time staff, Gawlo coordinates a paid network of 140 contributing analysts across 31 countries — recruited through university partnerships (19 institutions including Sciences Po and the London School of Economics), open pitch calls, and referrals from named editors. Every contributor is contracted, named, and credited on the piece.
HOW WE HOLD OURSELVES ACCOUNTABLE
CHAPTER ONE
Since January 2023, every correction, retraction, and methodology update at Gawlo is timestamped on a publicly auditable ledger at gawlo.net/corrections. The ledger is append-only: nothing is edited or deleted after publication. Readers can verify the exact moment a story was amended, what was amended, and which editor signed off on the change. We believe a corrections page that quietly rewrites itself is not a corrections page.
CHAPTER TWO
Gawlo's editorial correction rate sits at 0.4% — among the lowest in digital publishing. That figure is calculated against total articles published in a rolling twelve-month window, not against article views. We publish the methodology behind the calculation on the same page, including how we distinguish a typo from a substantive correction, and how Insiders-tier briefings are audited separately from open-access long-reads.
CHAPTER THREE
Gawlo was named one of Fast Company's "Most Innovative Media Companies" in both 2023 and 2024. In November 2024 the newsroom won the Online Journalism Award for Excellence in Digital Reporting in the Community-Driven Coverage category. The award citation noted the editorial team's "structural commitment to naming contributors and publishing methodology in public" — the same practices that produced the 0.4% correction rate.
